I bought the 2018 9.7" iPad (the cheapest one in the market at that time) and a 1st gen Apple Pencil and 2 years later I think it is the single best investment I have ever made on an Apple product.
The Pencil-iPad combo is perfect for my level of productivity, which involves jotting down notes, making highlights on books and PDFs, and drawing occasional diagrams. The UX seems very responsive and the pencil is quite delightful to use; they charge amazingly quickly and both devices boast a respectable day or so of battery life (I notice that my iPad has begun to drain a bit quicker than usual though, but I still can get away with one full charge a day).
I think somebody in the comments made a remark on how your Pencil may have been defective, but I’ve never too had a syncing problem with my Pencil. In my opinion, it’s only fair to review the “Pros of all Pros” by capitalising on all the features it was intended for.
The iPad is not bug-less, but quite frankly I’ve never experienced an Apple product that is completely bug free. I think it’s a compromise that comes with any electronic device for that matter, even the Tesla reported bugs during its early release.
I do believe that the iPad is not quite the Macbook replacement yet, but it’s slowly getting there.
